Old Town Bar

On the way home from work last night I met my friend Scott Eden for a drink at the Old Town Bar on 18th Street in Manhattan. Scott lives in Chicago, and was in town to do a few interviews for a freelance story. Old Town Bar (click photo to enlarge) has been a reliable standby for drinks and pub grub since 1892, and the beautiful old tavern has one feature that I've always appreciated: an ornate pressed-tin ceiling. Mark my words: any place with a pressed-tin ceiling, be it bar, restaurant, hair salon, or hardware store, is going to be a good place. I guarantee it.

Last night I enjoyed two pints of excellent Blue Point Toasted Lager, which Old Town has on draft. The Blue Point Brewery is located on Long Island, and their brews have made serious inroads into New York bars, restaurants, and bodegas. They even serve Blue Point Toasted Lager at Dressler, one of Brooklyn's finest restaurants. Anyway, Scott and I had a nice chat about the geopolitical state of the world, and then I had to go home. Jenn needed a break from watching Zachary, and I couldn't in good conscience bend another elbow, as pleasant as it was to unwind after a stressful day.

It's Friday today, and the weather in New York is generally pleasant. This morning Brooklyn had a dusting of snow on the trees, but it's mostly gone now. It was the first accumulation of the year. I wonder if we'll get a proper snowstorm this year at all. With the exception of two brief deep-freezes, the weather this winter has been strangely warm.

Happy 2007 Everybody!

Happy New Year, everbody! Jenn, Zachary, and I wish you luck and love in 2007. Christmas was very nice. We spent it relaxing at home in Brooklyn. We took the above photo on Christmas morning, when Zachary gave us his first real smile. We spent New Year's Eve the same way, relaxing at home. At the moment, Zachary is too young to travel (he's only five weeks old). Once he gets his immunizations we can think about going somewhere. Of course, his parents need a vacation more than ever, but it will have to wait.

I'll provide a more substantial update soon, but in the meantime, out with the old, and in with the new.
